A nursing school is an educational institution for training and educating to prepare  a fully qualified nurse  to work in hospitals and related medical facilities.
Nursing has been an ancient practice. Some of those practices followed during ancient times are still a part of modern syllabus in Nursing Schools in India.
Though, a huge paradigm shift is changing role of women in Nursing. In ancient times, it was a male dominated profession as was the society and it was just an occasional role of a midwife that women used to share. It was a reflection of the caste system and low status of women in society. But, today there is a complete reversal. Women today are not only participating but are excelling in today’s Nursing Industry.

 Nursing: A brief History

 Military nursing
This started with commissioning of a hospital for soldiers by the East India Company in 1664. The sisters were sent from St Thomas' Hospital, London to this Fort St. George Hospital in Madras. This was the start of Military Nursing in India.

Maternity
First Maternity Hospital was built by Dr. John Underwood in Madras in 1797. Later in 1854 training school for midwives was established by the British Govt.

Training schools
First school of nursing was started with a 6 month Diploma Midwives Program in 1871. The pilot batch was of four students.

National Nursing Associations came into being in early 20th Century. Dr. BC Roy was a great exponent in improving standards of nurse training.
